It takes a village… or, in my case, a Mother-in-Law

Um... this post has nothing to do with these Village People.

For the next couple days my mother-in-law, Paula, will be staying with my wife and me. Honestly I couldn’t be happier.

POP QUIZ
Why (in the world) am I actually excited for my mother-in-law to come stay with us?
A. Because Paula and I are bestees, and we can’t go two days without talking. (bestee – opposite of leastee)
B. Because she’s going to be cooking us some home-made meals during her stay.
C. Because she’s going to baby-sit our little guy, Brady, while we’re at work (saving us mucho dinero).
D. Because she’s going to “passive-aggressively” cause me to be less lazy, and get more things done around the house and in the yard over the next couple days.
E. All of the above, except the second part of A. – “can’t go two days without talking”.

The answer… while a little confusing, is obviously E. Ok, so we’re not bestees (just so you know, I don’t actually speak like this), but the truth is I get along great with my mother-in-law, and can’t imagine not having her help us out from time to time, be it – making a meal, giving us temporary breaks from our parental duties, and even guilting me into working harder. Let me explain the last one. I am a procrastinator. My wife, and her mother are not. I get things done, but at a later time than these ladies would like. While I usually don’t mind my wife taking the initiative and finishing one of my projects before I happen to get around to it (example – the dishes), I can’t stand to let a guest in my house do even one of my chores. (My friend/neighbor Shane is another story. He does a ton of them! – see the bottom of this post for more on him.)  While I’ll admit she’s gotten away with doing a few of them in the past, mark my words, those days are over. In fact, over my lunch hour I quickly washed and dried all the dishes and dirty bottles before she arrived.

How does this relate to Morningside College? Well, I like to think of our campus community (faculty, staff, alumni, and current students) as an extended family. There always seems to be someone watching out for your best interests, helping out when you need it most, and constantly pushing you to become a better student, athlete, or all around person, even though at times it may not seem that way because of extra homework, tough practices, etc. If you ask me, it’s silly to think just one or two people should be entrusted with raising a child (Paula, if you’re reading this, I’m not asking you to move in with us), but it takes many more people (a whole family or community) to help educate, care for, and raise a well rounded individual.

With family, friends, and the Morningside Community watching his back, our little man, Brady, should be just fine.

Thanks Paula for all your help, and thanks to everyone else for reading this post. Oh yeah, and don’t forget to read about my neighbor below. Take care!

Shane TownsendMy nominee for neighbor of the year.
Yesterday he mowed my back yard, edged my entire property, and cut down some large tree branches. No, Shane’s not my lawn service man – he’s actually my chiropractor! He also happens to be an avid outdoorsman, loves to fish (trophy fish are hung all over his office), and he’s always looking for ways he can help his friends and neighbors. I’m fairly new to this whole home ownership thing, and he’s been kind enough to take me under his wing and help me quite a bit. I’ll probably bring up Shane, his wife Cindy, and other friends of mine in future posts, but for now I just want to give him a shout out as a thank you for all his help. If you’re in need of a GOOD chiropractor, I highly recommend him. Thanks for everything Shane!
Check out his website for more information – Butler-Townsend Chiropractic
… Don’t forget, if you ask him nicely he may come do yard work for you too. Just tell him Jim sent you. :)

EVERYONE loves Chicken, and Beware of Wild Wizards…

The All-Campus Potluck - Wednesday, July 14, 2010

Before I talk of sorcery, I’d like to give you a quick update. On Wednesday we held our Annual “All-Campus Potluck” for Morningside faculty and staff. In my last post I asked people for advice on what I should bring. I was pleased to have received a few suggestions (the most popular being prime rib… ), but in the end I decided to go with my OWN gut, and my contribution to the meal was Kentucky Fried Chicken.

In case you don’t know me too well, I’m one of those people who tends to buy gifts for friends and family that I LIKE, then later try and persuade the person(s) I’m giving them to get excited about MY gift… While this almost inevitably fails, as it did with my little nephew when I recently bought him a soccer ball for his birthday (at 3 years old he has no patience to learn the game of futbol), my chicken, at least in my opinion, was a huge success. In fact, it was all gone before I was even able to get a piece. I was really looking forward to it too… Anyway, the potluck was another great success even though one of my all-time favorite dishes wasn’t there this year, Char Jorgenson‘s “Cheesy Potatoes”. Char, wasn’t able to attend the potluck, but I want her to know if she’s reading this – you don’t need a special occasion to bring your delicious dish to the office… hint, hint. :)

BEWARE OF WILD WIZARDS
As for the second half of today’s title, “Beware of Wild Wizards”, I actually got that from the latest look of the Spoonholder. I’m not positive on this, but I believe it was painted by an AmeriCorps crew (The Maple 7) out of Vinton, Iowa. It’s hands down the most “creative” look the Spoonholder has adorned in quite some time. While the front makes it very clear as to the purpose it has been painted for (it mentions AmeriCorps and the Habitat for Humanity), I’m kind of at a loss for words as to what a few things on the back are about, mainly the part that reads, “Beware of Wild Wizards”. :) (maybe this was drawn on by someone else later, but I’m not sure.) In any case, it’s always neat to see a new look on the Spoonholder, especially one that has been given to it by service oriented non-Morningsiders who took the time to take part in one of our traditions. Check out the photos below.

Is that a lion in a jester hat...?

Thanks for reading, take care, and have a great weekend!

World Cup Raffle Contest Winners, a “Main Dish”, and P.S. – I still hate the Yankees

This morning I randomly selected the winners of our World Cup Raffle Contest. Our grand prize winner was Claire Gibbons, an incoming freshman from Duluth, Minnesota. Second place went to current Morningside soccer player, Jeremy Lenz, and third place went to current Morningside student Ismael Valadez. (You can see how we selected our winners by watching the short video, “The Drawing”, I posted to our fan page. – 1 minute 56 seconds.)

Click the image to view the video - The music in the video is one of my new favorite songs, "Chelsea Dagger", which I first heard blared during the Stanley Cup playoffs whenever the Chicago Blackhawks would score a goal. I's a tough song to get out of your head! :)

I don’t have much to tell you today, except that I’m really excited for two events… first, the MLB All-Star Game is tonight – which the American League will dominate, of course. Then, tomorrow, our annual “All Campus Potluck” is taking place for our Morningside College faculty and staff. I only have one minor concern… I have no idea what I should bring! As you can see in the flyer below – in case you’re unaware of my last name, it’s Braunschweig. :) – I’m supposed to bring a main dish… Any suggestions? An email, Facebook message, or blog comment would be greatly appreciated.

Anyway, I’ll do my best to bring something everyone will enjoy, and I’ll also try to take a few pictures of the event to share with you in another short blog post or Fan Page update later this week. Hope everyone has a great night!

P.S. – It’s true. I despise the Yankees. But because all the Yankee fans out there are mourning the loss of the person most responsible for making them what they are today – a major league power house, I won’t rip on them today. Instead, I’m going to give Yankee fans something they already know to be true of most other “haters” like me out there, and something that should bring a smile back to all Yankee fans reading this; the real reason I’ve never liked the Yankees. “I hate the Yankees… because they are SO damn good.” :) Rest in peace Mr. Steinbrenner.

Thanks to Spain, 3 lucky Morningside Fans will win some Soccer Swag!

Fans celebrate as Spain wins the 2010 World Cup

About a month ago we hosted a World Cup Raffle Contest on our Morningside College Fan Page. We had 96 fans enter by simply posting who they thought would win this year’s World Cup. Of those 96, 28 of them selected Spain as the winner, and are therefore eligible to win the following prizes (pictures below) courtesy of our Soccer Coach, Tom Maxon, and our Morningside College Men’s and Women’s Soccer Programs.

1. Morningside College Soccer Rain Jacket
2. Morningside College Soccer Jersey (#19)
3. Morningside College Soccer – Coaching Shirt (Dri-Fit)

SELECTING OUR WINNERS…

Tomorrow we will draw the name of one person as our grand prize winner and two more as our second and third place winners. The grand prize winner will choose which item they want, followed by the second place person. Third place will receive the left-over item… my guess is it will be the coaching shirt. :)

You may be asking, “why are you waiting until tomorrow to draw the winners?”… I’m waiting because it just so turns out we had a few Morningside faculty and staff enter the contest (technically, they are as big of Morningside fans as the next person), and in case they should win I didn’t want any conspiracy theories getting started on how we selected our winners; so tomorrow I will be video taping the drawing and posting it to our fan page so everyone knows the raffle was fair and legit to all who entered. At the end of this post is the list of the 28 people who are eligible to win, but first, to EVERYONE who took part in our World Cup Raffle Contest I’d just like to say thank you, and please stay tuned for more “random” Morningside College Facebook contests throughout the year. Good luck to the 28 of you in the raffle, and I’ll contact the 3 winners via Facebook message immediately following the drawing.

Take care and have a good one!

Sad Day for the World of Higher Education

In case you haven’t heard by now, Dana College in Blair, Nebraska announced they will be closing their doors. To be honest, I really don’t know much about the whole situation other than the little bits and pieces of information I’ve been able to gather from the news, and from Dana’s Facebook fan page. However, the bottom line is yesterday was a sad day for the world of higher education. Below is the email message we received from our College President, John Reynders, informing us of Dana closing. I think it accurately reflects how everyone at Morningside College feels about the situation.

I am saddened to report that Dana College has decided to close its doors effective immediately.  The article from the Omaha World-Herald is located in the link provided below.  The higher education community and the city of Blair, Nebraska, have lost an institution with a long, rich history that impacted the lives of thousands of students for well over 100 years.  Our hearts and prayers go out to the employees, families and students impacted by this difficult and painful decision.

Link to the story: http://www.omaha.com/article/20100630/NEWS01/100639974

If you happen to know of any students who were current students at Dana or were planning on enrolling there as freshmen this fall, please let them know Morningside is still accepting applications for the upcoming school year. If they have any questions they may contact our Office of Admissions at (712) 274-5511. Thank you.

On the lighter side of things… On behalf of everyone here at Morningside, we wish you a happy and SAFE 4th of July weekend… please be careful with those fireworks and sparklers! :)
