The Mside Admissions Guy

Registration Day and Social Media (Twitter)

The weather posed a threat this morning (we were in some severe weather for awhile), but we still managed to have another great registration day. Actually, once the storms broke we ended up having a beautiful day on campus for our future students and their families.

I tried something new during our event today… I posted updates throughout the day about it on twitter. It was a lot of fun being able to talk about our event as it happened in real time, but as I look back over some of the “tweets” I think at times I sounded more like a weatherman than an Admissions Counselor. :)

If you’d like to see the updates from today and our twitter page click below. (The newest updates, “tweets” are always shown at the top so you may have to scroll down to see the posts from this morning.)

I think twitter could be a great tool for students who aren’t able to attend an event on campus to learn more about us and be kept in the loop about what is happening here. I also found out it’s a great way to get in touch with Alumni! In fact, after one of my posts I received a message (“tweet”) from a former Morningsider who said, “brings back memories!” We messaged back and forth a few times after that, and I now have a new friend and Morningside Alumni connection because of it. Below is the conversation that took place on twitter this morning. (Please keep in mind I have never had a conversation with him before, but we were able to connect with one another through a common interest… Morningside College.)

I replied:
Thanks for following!
Also thanks for the compliment on our Twitter account awhile back…
Joel Weyand told me you liked what we’re doing.

I replied:
btw, my name’s Jim Braunschweig, and if you ever have any advice on any of this mass comm/social media stuff please let me know :)

I’ve been on twitter for awhile now, but I’m far from being an expert. I continue to learn new things everyday, and I think the advice my new friend and fellow Morningside Alumni, who just so happens to be a college professor, gave me this morning rings true for anyone who has even a “slight” interest in what Twitter is or how it works… “just start using it.”

http://twitter.com/ – Create a twitter account. You know you want to!

For those of you who happen to be anti-twitter (we actually have a few in our office who are) that’s okay. It’s good to be skeptical and critical of things, however, it’s also nice to be able to form your opinion on something by having your own experience with it. I just want you to know if you happen to be interested in trying out twitter, but fear you’ll be all alone on it, you can start by following msideadmissions. :) I can almost guarantee if you get used to it you’ll become as addicted to it as most of you probably are to facebook… not sure if that’s a good thing!

Anyway, thanks to everyone who attended today’s event and to those of you that followed along on twitter.
Below is a tweet we received from one of our psychology professors, Kim Christopherson who must have been following along today!

One more thing…
We have our final registration day taking place tomorrow… more bad weather expected in the morning I think, but we’ll make it an enjoyable day for our guests. Good luck to those auditioning for Siouxland Idol tonight, and in case I’m unable to get another post up tomorrow, thanks for reading and have a great weekend!
