The Mside Admissions Guy

Location, Location, Location…

Sioux City Landscape

At Morningside we take a lot of pride in offering our students many different on-campus activities they can participate in throughout their college years. We also offer our students on-campus jobs so they don’t have to leave campus to make some money. Those are just a few of the perks a small college has to offer, but what happens should a student become bored with our on campus activities, wants to get an off-campus job, or, more importantly, wants to get some real world experience by taking an internship?

Today I’m going to share with you the importance of location when considering a college, and also provide you with more information on Morningside’s location. For those of you who have been following the Transformers vs. Harry Potter Poll in the last few posts, I will give you the results and my review at the bottom.

“Location, location, location”… this phrase is often considered the golden rule in real estate, but I think it’s also an important factor for students to consider as they begin their college search.

I believe there are two major factors when considering the location of a college; distance and community.

As an admissions counselor I’ve found that distance tends to be one of the first things on the minds of students and parents alike when they first start thinking about college; how close or how far they would like it to be from home. In fact, by the time they visit with me, many of them already have the ideal travel time picked out… maybe 1-3 hours from home. It’s great that they have been thinking about distance because it is important, but I find it surprising how many haven’t thought about the communities where the colleges are located.

The community where a college is located often ends up playing as big a role in a student’s college experience as the college itself.

Please remember that if you’re considering a 4 year college, you will be living at or near the college you choose for about the same period of time… give or take if you choose to go home for the summer. :)
Classes and homework keep our students occupied. That’s where a lot of their time is spent during the week; but not all of it. It’s up to our students to spend their free time as they want, and many choose to take advantage of our great location.

Welcome to Sioux City, Iowa

Of course I’m a little biased, but I think Morningside couldn’t ask to be in a better location. I feel the students that choose to attend Morningside get the best of both worlds; a small college atmosphere, located within a large city. There is far too much for me to tell you about Sioux City in just one post, so I’m going to provide you with some links that will allow you to do your own research. There are numerous Sioux City websites out there, but one that I find to be the most helpful and informative belongs to our Siouxland Chamber of Commerce.

A few months ago I met with Beth Trejo who works at the Chamber. We decided to set up a couple meetings because both of us were interested in reaching our audience (you!) in new ways. We discussed using all types of social media including Twitter, Facebook, and Blogging. (This blog just happened to be a result of one of those meetings, so I hope you like it.)

Anyway, they’ve done a great job at implementing these forms of communication, and if you are interested in learning more about Sioux City please check out their website, subscribe to their blog, or follow them on twitter. I will provide more info on the various entertainment, employment, and internships that are available to our students here in future posts, but for now I’ll allow the Chamber to introduce you to Sioux City.

By the way, Beth never attended Morningside, but she does happen to have a connection to the college; her mother, Mary Kovarna, is the head of our Nursing department. Thanks Mary for getting Beth and me in touch!

Below are links to a few maps I created for our visitors using google maps. I hope to add them to our campus visit webpage soon so our guests can better plan their trip and take a closer look at Sioux City while they’re here.

AND NOW FOR THE RESULTS!
The results are in from the Transformers vs. Harry Potter poll.

HARRY POTTER used his magic to defeat the Transformers 17-13.
(If you’re not sure what the poll is about you can refer back to it here… it’s located at the bottom of the post)

Well it looks like I’ll be attending the new Harry Potter movie later this month… Tanya has so generously offered to loan me her Harry Potter books so I can get caught up on the story before I go. Sorry Tanya, there’s no way I’m going to read them, but I am actually considering watching the previous movies because I don’t want to go into this thing not knowing what the heck is going on… which brings me to my Transformers Review.

I’m so glad I’ve always been a fan of Transformers, because it’s really the only reason I was able to enjoy the movie and understand what was going on. I hate to admit it, but I think the critics were right this time. I thought Transformers was a mess as far as the plot, story line, and acting were concerned, but it did have some really cool robots, a ton of explosions, and Megan Fox to make up for it.

If you are looking forward to seeing Transformers please take the following advice… DO NOT READ THE REVIEWS! As I’ve already stated they are actually pretty accurate, but some will give you details that you’ll end up looking for in the movie, and because of this… at least in my case, I spent more time looking for these flaws (which they were right about) rather than just enjoying the movie. Believe it or not but my wife actually enjoyed the movie more than I did… which is very sad, because as much as I wanted to enjoy it I was too busy watching for and analyzing all the stuff I read in the reviews.

Overall the movie is a lot of fun, the special effects are amazing, and I definitely recommend you still see it. Even with the bad reviews it is on pace to make box office history. By the way, the toys from this movie are pretty sweet too… I’m really glad I have a nephew to use as an excuse for me to check them out in the toy aisle. :)
