Meet a Morningside Student: Meet Terence

Tuesday afternoon the Admissions Counselors were having a ball...

Before I introduce you to Terence I have a couple quick updates…

First off, bowling yesterday did not go quite as I had planned for the Braunschweig’s Bowling Beauties (Allie, Ashley, and I) as we were trounced by the other teams pretty badly. (Read yesterday’s post to find out why we were bowling.) I believe our combined score for 3 games was somewhere in the 800′s. The Dirty Turkey’s (Jeremy, Tanya, and Amy) took second with a score in the upper 900′s, and the champions were the Rogue Pilgrims (Mack, Steph, and Jen) with a score of 1124. Mack, Steph, and Jen received a t-shirt from the bookstore for their efforts as well as bragging rights in the office until we face off again sometime next August. We all had a lot of fun, and look forward to another great year together.

Last night I attended Sioux City East High School’s Freshmen Orientation. While college is still four years away and probably the last thing on these students’ mind as they begin their first year of high school, I briefly spoke in front of the 200+ freshmen and their parents stressing the importance of this year to them. Their freshman year will be included on their high school transcript so it’s important they start off on the right foot. I encouraged them to take challenging courses and to take advantage of the dual-credit courses that East High School offers them. I reminded them that their guidance counselors will assist them in setting up a good class schedule with their best interests in mind, and also they should get involved in extra curricular activities, athletics, or other student groups. Of course colleges want strong academic students, but at Morningside we’re also looking for students who want to be involved and take advantage of everything we have to offer them. One of our current students is a great example of this…

Meet Terence
Morningside College Student

IMG_8458Terence came to Morningside in the Fall of 2007 from Malvern, Iowa, a small town in southeast Iowa. He’s currently a Junior majoring in computer science, and considering a minor in psychology. I asked him what he plans to do after college, and at this point he told me he’s interested in becoming a data recovery specialist. Learn more about Data Recovery – gotta love wikipedia!

I was actually Terence’s Admissions Counselor two years ago and I personally assisted him with his college search and the college admissions process. I chose to tell you about Terence today because he’s a great example of a student that really takes advantage of what Morningside College has to offer our students financially, academically, and in the area of co-curriculars.

Financially speaking, Morningside, as well as other private colleges in Iowa, offer our students excellent financial aid assistance. We have scholarships available based on a students academic record and ACT score, other awards based on a student’s extra curricular activities, and athletic grants for our student athletes. (After a student applies and is accepted at Morningside their college admissions counselor will walk them through this process. Prospective students Apply Now!) Terence just so happened to be able to receive scholarships and aid in all of these areas from Morningside. In fact, I still remember the day he returned to campus to interview and audition for his talent achievement awards. He brought his trumpet to audition for a music scholarship based on his high school achievement in band, and he later had an interview with Randy Campbell about computer science. Randy just so happens to be one of his favorite professors now.

Academically we were a great fit for Terence because we have an excellent computer science program, and professors to go along with it. I honestly can’t recall how many times I’ve heard praise from current and prospective students about Randy Campbell and our other professors in the Computer Science Department… if you’re a prospective student, don’t take my word for it, schedule a visit and find out for yourself. :)

Co-curricular activities are where Terence really excels, and they are probably the main reason he has really enjoyed his time here as a student. He is very outgoing, social, and likes to be involved. Terence joined the Acacia fraternity as a Freshman, and now serves as the Senior Dean (Vice President) of the Acacia Fraternity on campus. He is also a member of our Golf Team. Terence currently works in Tech services for work study on campus, along with many of our other computer science majors, and assists students, faculty, and staff with all their technology needs. This year Terence decided to take on an additional responsibility and will be working with us in the Admissions Office as a student ambassador. We’re very excited to have him on the team, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, you may be lucky enough to have him as your tour guide when you visit campus!

If you ever have any questions for Terence please let me know, and I’ll forward your message onto him. If you’re interested in computer science, golf, or fraternity life, he’d be a great resource for you!

Thanks for reading, and I’ll be back with my final post for the week on Friday afternoon.
Take care and have a good one!
